UMKC students around campus shared their resolutions and trend forecasts in the form of In/Out lists for the new year.
Across the board, students are looking to minimize their screen time. Freshman health sciences major Kelly Lor said “doomscrolling” is one of her outs this year.
“I get distracted, my attention is ruined, my sleep schedule is ruined. There’s no pros to it at all,” Lor said. “My state of mind and body are more important to me than me knowing what some stranger spends their day doing on the internet.”
A common trend amongst students this year is physical health. The Swinney Center was mentioned by many students. Lor said she frequently finds her classmates there outside of class.
Sophomore information technology major Victoria Jones specifically called yoga classes at the Swinney Center an in. She finds the environment “relaxing and welcoming.”
Jones also thinks the ground floor of Miller Nichols Library is in. She recommends taking a look at the Marr Sound Archives.
“It’s really cool because you can play records of your choice and listen while you do homework, read, or just sit and relax,” Jones said.
Similarly, Ruben Renteria, a freshman architecture major, thinks physical media is in for 2025. “When you have a CD or a record player, you’re able to appreciate the music a lot more than just listening to it on your phone,” said Renteria.
Junior media, art and design major Alex Bachtell said one of her outs is overconsumption. “What should be trendy is wearing what you already own and not buying so much new stuff just to find it lame after a few months,” Bachtell said.
Outside of academics, students’ ins and outs differ. When it comes to fashion, many are leaning towards maximalist trends like chunky jewelry or creative hairstyles.
On the other hand, some students are staying minimalistic. Renteria thinks brand names are out. Specific brands mentioned by students as outs included Dr. Martens, Nike and Hermes. “Clothing shouldn’t be the main focus of your person, there’s more to you than fashion,” Renteria said.
