While the Kansas City metro is under a blizzard warning until Monday morning, students are finding creative solutions to ride out the storm.
As of 10:30 a.m. today, the National Weather Service has measured around 5 inches of snow just in Kansas City, while surrounding areas are seeing up to 8 or more inches.
“I’ve been rewatching some of my favorite shows, as well as baking,” said senior strategic communications and digital journalism major Ophelia Griffin. “I just made sourdough hot cocoa cinnamon rolls, they’re so good.”
The last time Missouri faced snow totals of this stature was in February 2013, so some students have mixed emotions about the weather.
“I really hate the snow. I hate the cold in general, so I’m ready for summer,” said junior political science and English major Aunnesty Dwyer. “I’ve just been redecorating my new place and rewatching ‘Yellowstone.’”
Other students are happy that the area is finally getting snow again.
“I absolutely love snow! Living in Washington as a kid solidified my snowman-making and snowball-fighting skills,” said sophomore psychology major Sol Disney. “I find snow very comforting and beautiful, it makes me feel calm and at ease.”
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has urged all Missouri residents to avoid the roads.
“Drivers need to avoid traveling until conditions improve sometime on Monday,” said MoDOT Chief Safety and Operations Officer Becky Allmeroth. “For the remainder of this weekend, travel should be limited to emergencies only. These difficult conditions will also delay response times for our crews and emergency response partners.”
Snow will continue to fall until midnight, and campus operations will be remote on Monday, Jan. 6. UMKC libraries, recreational facilities and School of Dentistry clinics will be closed.
