The Social Sunrise Club and Breakfast Club helped students start their day right with early morning snacks at the University Walkway on Nov. 5.
Both UMKC clubs staged the table of treats from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., giving students the opportunity to eat before their classes. Brothers Chris and Michael Vierrmann started the clubs two months ago with major success.
The Sunrise Social Club focuses on early morning events with the intent of bringing students together as a community.
“We noticed that a lot of students miss out on breakfast due to tight schedules,” said senior biology major and President of the Social Sunrise Club Chris Vierrmann. “The purpose of our clubs is to create an environment where we can hand out free snacks and beverages to students as they head to class.”
The Sunrise Social Club has over 250 members, having grown significantly in two short months. Chris highlighted the club’s late-night pancake events, which had over 200 attendees each.
Michael Viermann’s organization, The Breakfast Club, has been preparing since August to take their goals a step further, planning big initiatives to tackle pressing issues involving food.
“Our big mission is to help tackle the food insecurity on campus and in the community, while also being able to bring breakfast to students and ensuring they can go to class without an empty stomach,” said Michael Vierrmann, a junior biology major.
The club has been working alongside groups both inside and outside of UMKC, like Roo Pantry, to help students struggling with food shortages.
With that, they want to stress the importance of having a good, nutritional breakfast by having informational flyers and events around campus.
“We are looking at having different nutrient-specific events where we promote the importance of having protein, different fats and a variety of nutrients in your breakfast.” said Michael Vierrmann.
Michael Vierrmann said that the club plans on having volunteering opportunities for students to contribute, urging those interested to become members through RooGroups.
Both clubs will collaborate again on Nov. 21 with an opportunity to grab more snacks at the University Walkway.
