UMKC’s student-led sustainability project Thrift-a-Roo calls for donations and additional members to fuel their mission of reduced waste and aid in education across borders.
Thrift-a-Roo got started last year through UMKC’s entrepreneurial organization, Enactus. Since then, they’ve been an expanding organization always welcoming new members.
“This year we have a bigger team ready to bring Thrift-a-Roo to life,” sophomore Dariana Torres, leader of Thrift-a-Roo said.
The organization has three main goals: reducing waste and tackling fast fashion, minimizing the impacts of overconsumption and encouraging sustainable practices.
“I personally like thrifting a lot,” Eduardo Sandoval, theater major and freshman at UMKC said. “Just to hear UMKC having their own pop-up shop really gravitated me towards it.”
So far, Thrift-a-Roo has an incredible collection of donations.. These donations are what fuels Thrift-a-Roo – if you, any friends or family have old clothing, accessories or shoes that need to go, Thrift-a-Roo is here to take them off your hands.
Profits made by Thrift-a-Roo will go towards underdeveloped schools in Mexico under the project “Education sin Fronteras.” to improve classrooms and help make school supplies available to those in need.
“That being one of the main goals is really what made me want to join Thrift-a-Roo,” Sandoval said.
The students of Thrift-a-Roo meet every Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in room 332 at the Bloch Executive Hall. If anyone is interested in becoming a member of Thrift-a-Roo, fill out their interest form or visit their Instagram page @thrifta.roo for more information.
