The Women’s Center at UMKC hosted an event called Crafty Feminism Social Hour on Oct. 19 to provide students a place to relax while raising awareness for domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Attendees were able to color on glass jars and write positive affirmations such as ‘You’re worthy’ or ‘You’re loved.’
The social hour event created a laid-back and friendly environment, which allowed students to mingle.
Joined by this event was a UMKC support service called RISE, which stands for rise, intervention, support and education.
“We partnered with the Women’s Center this month because today marks ‘Purple Thursday.’ We encourage people to wear purple on the third Thursday to show support for Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” said Alyson Frydman, a RISE Coordinator.
RISE promotes awareness and educates people about sexual assault violence, gender-based violence and more.
They offer crisis intervention, advocacy, and resource referrals and training.
“It’s a great way to come back when you are feeling down, you can look back to these reminders and believe it,” said Elaina Cronin, the Women’s Center front office associate.
The staff at the UMKC Women’s Center share with the visitors that everyone is welcome to come hang out, watch movies, study and explore a variety of resources.
Chelsie Duckworth, Women Center Coordinator and one of the hosts of the Crafty Feminism Social Hour shared how eager they are to see UMKC students get involved.
Duckworth said these events help share resources that the Women’s Center offers, such asa quaint coffee bar, study area, meeting room and over 800 books.
“We have low-key events, especially in the fall. I love seeing people exchange numbers, and making plans to hop to various events together. We have a book club, feminism film Friday and we help facilitate conversation so you don’t feel any pressure,” said Duckworth.
