Kenzie Hunt, a junior at UMKC majoring in studio art, is a passionate artist, painter and student who came to UMKC to blossom as an artist.
She bends styles and mediums, but leans towards practicing realism, surrealism and expressionism.
“I had known for a long time that I wanted to pursue an art degree,” said Hunt. “I like that our art program at UMKC is pretty versatile in the art classes they offer, not just drawing, painting, and digital media, but printmaking and fibers.”
Color plays an important role in Hunt’s artwork, and she said she wants to keep expanding her use of it. Hunt said she has several artists she follows for inspiration such as Parker Parrella.
“She does a lot of paintings based on nature and also has an amazing use of color throughout her work, viewing her art has really inspired me to branch out with bolder color palettes,” said Hunt.
While still not decided on her future career, Hunt said she’s open to many different opportunities, from illustration, freelancing or event tattooing. She credited UMKC faculty for helping her grow artistically.
“We’ve got some really talented professors in the art department, some of which offer independent study courses for subjects that aren’t taught in a larger scale class, like bookmaking,” said Hunt.
Fellow art major, Bec Hayes, spoke to their favorite aspects of Hunt’s work.
“I’ve known Kenzie to incorporate a lot of floral elements into her work which is something I always enjoy to see,” said Hayes. “She knows how to draw attention to the main subject.”
