The UMKC Conservatory community mourned with music in a memorial concert at Grant Hall on Friday, Oct. 18, in remembrance of pianist and graduate student Yuxi Wu.
Wu, who was struck by a car while near campus on Sept. 26, was remembered for her passion for music, compassionate nature and desire for knowledge.
Conservatory Dean Courtney Crappell hoped the concert would be a space of reflection and offered a moment of remembrance, pausing all Conservatory activities at 1:55 p.m. and resuming after the event.
“She was a passionate and talented pianist dedicated not only to mastering her craft, but also to sharing her love for music with others,” said Crappell. “She was the kind of student who was always trying to improve and always eager to deepen her understanding of the music she loves.”
The event featured five songs, including piano duets, a string quartet and a small choir performance by the Friends of UMKC choir.
Tom Rosenkrantz, a piano professor at UMKC, explained the deeper meanings behind the music performed.
“She was a vibrant, positive person with a bright, bright future,” said Rosenkrantz. “These pieces that we have prepared for you all are a way to reflect Yuxi’s musical interest as well as some of her culture.”
The pieces of music centered around different aspects of Yuxi’s life, from her passion for church and fellowship to her heritage.
“She was from China, and the lyrics reflect longing for one’s homeland and always remaining optimistic through the trials and tribulations in life,” Rosenkrantz said about the fourth piece.
The memorial ended with a reception to allow community members, friends and family to connect and remember Wu’s life.
