The Vietnamese Student Association members spent Thursday afternoon at the Student Union celebrating their cultural tradition, the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as Tết Trung Thu, is a key part of Vietnamese culture where people gather to celebrate family and the new season.
VSA members spent their time giving out fortune cookies and Hi-Chew’s, while serving different cultural foods. They had fried rice, red bean mooncakes and crab rangoons.
“I definitely came for the free food,” said freshman Kamiya Wilson. “At first I was nervous to come, but I am glad I did because it was something fun to do after a long day of classes.”
For $3 a cup, the VSA also served Chè Thái, a Vietnamese dessert soup with coconut milk, jellies and fruits.
“It is very milky and more sweet than I thought it would be,” said Wilson.
Students enjoyed the Vietnamese food and music, while also painting the lanterns.
“We hope to grow in members and make new memories, as well as share our Vietnamese culture more with UMKC,” said Co-President, Sara Phan.
When asked what other events UMKC can look forward to, Sara mentioned their Vietnamese New Year celebration in February.
“It is our biggest event of the year where we have live performances, food and games. It is also a great time to meet more people,” said Phan.
