For the first time since 2008, the Kansas City Roos men’s soccer team defeated a top 25 opponent.
On Saturday night, the Roos took on the Denver Pioneers.
The game had similarities to the 2023 Summit League Men’s Soccer Semifinals, where Denver entered ranked but Kansas City pulled off the upset.
Unlike the last meeting between these two, regulation did not result in a draw. The only goal scored in the game was just before the clock struck 14 minutes by junior forward Elie Kisoka.
This win over Denver propelled the Roos into first place in the Summit League. According to Kisoka, it puts a target on the team’s back.
“We are here for that,” said Kisoka. “It’s soccer. We are prepared to play this game, play the other game, and to play the next game too.”
Kisoka wasn’t the only highlight of the game. Senior goalkeeper Brandon McGaugh had a stellar performance .
Recording three saves in his fourth shutout of the season, McGaugh played a pivotal role in the win.
“The mentality was to keep them out of the net,” said McGaugh. “We were up 1-0, so if they didn’t score, we would win.”
Winning this game gives the Roos a chance to be ranked in the United Soccer Coaches top 25 poll for the first time in head coach Ryan Pore’s four-year tenure.
“To me, it feels like another win,” said Pore. “I’ve always believed in this group no matter who we played. I don’t care what number is in front of you. We just want more wins.”
Ranked wins are always significant for players and fans. Denver, ranked third, is tied for the highest ranked team Kansas City has ever beaten. In 1996 and 2008, the Roos beat third-ranked Creighton.
The most recent win against a ranked opponent was also in 2008 against No. 19 Drake.
“This team won the Roos way,” said Pore. “I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Kansas City only has four games left at home this season. To catch the Roos in action, tickets are available here.
