The Student Government Association (SGA) hosted a RooRefresh event on Sept. 30, to give students a moment of reflection, free beverages and a chance to voice their concerns on resident housing.
As part of their running ticket, SGA executive board members, President Yasmen Hassen, Vice President Scott Nguyen and Internal Affairs Director Alex Unseth created the event to engage students between classes and collect information organically.
“My goal this year is to find ways to utilize the city to benefit students here on campus,” said Hassen. “We’re working on gathering more data and seeing how to continue with the chancellor, but we are also gauging if there’s interest from students for resident housing within the city.”
The new KC Streetcar stop at 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard will provide more transportation options to students and staff coming from various parts of the city. More stops along the route could increase the possibility of off-campus student housing.
“One of the big issues we found last year was that we have a lot of students and people within SGA who live in student housing, and there were some issues like mold and constant flooding,” said Nguyen.
Since 2019, Roo News has reported over five different campus housing floods.
“We have been able to meet with the Chancellor about what is happening at the higher level, and we can understand and communicate that information with the students,” said Nguyen.
Over 60% of the people who attended the pop-up and filled out the survey were first-year students, most of whom are affected the most by finding resident housing.
The form will be open throughout the year to continuously monitor student’s needs and demographics regarding housing on and off campus.
