A Peter Pan Playbill
This national tour of “Peter Pan” has a modern twist, as it is set in the present day and removes the song “Ugg-a-Wugg,” which appeared in the original production.
The song, containing mocking gibberish and Indigenous stereotypes, has received backlash from the Indigenous community and viewers at large.
Ensemble member Jordan Deleon speaks about his experience in the new production.
“The updated script by Larissa Fasthorse keeps all the fun parts but gives respect and honor to indigenous communities,” said Deleon. “It’s so special being able to bring a part of me and my culture on stage every night.”
This production’s script, written by Larissa FastHorse, replaces various outdated terms and storylines, and introduces the new song “Friends Forever” in place of “Ugg-a-Wugg.”
This event occurred during UMKC’s family weekend, bringing students, family members and alumni alike to enjoy the show.
Kylee Medlin, a third-year chemistry and psychology major, got to appreciate the experience with her family.
“This is our third year participating and they love it absolutely every time,” said Medlin. “The show was amazing and the actors put in so much hard work and talent.”
Medlin also served as the night’s Kasey Roo, taking pictures and interacting with audience members.
The show utilized an elaborate fly system and intricate set pieces, bringing the pixie dust and magic to life for audiences.
Sophomore criminal justice major Yasmina Mokhtar shared her thoughts on the production.
“I didn’t mind the modern twist too much, but it felt like it was taking away from the magic fairytale aspect of Peter Pan,” said Mokhtar.
This production is scheduled to tour until May of 2025 with shows across the country.
