Despite sunshine turning into rain upon the Country Club Plaza, hundreds of thousands gathered at the 93rd annual Plaza Art Fair to explore the artwork of over 240 artists.
The wholesome, welcoming event showcased thousands of artworks ranging from paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewelry and more through Sept. 20- 22. With over 20 local restaurant booths and three stages hosting more than 40 musical artists, the Plaza Art Fair provided a load of entertainment for all.
“It’s really cool that we get to see stuff like this so close to campus,” said Caden Cunningham, a UMKC sophomore.“The amount of talent we’ve seen is unreal.”
Michael Gard’s artwork was one that certainly stood out amongst the booths. With his alluring wire figure sculptures hanging high, attendees gathered in awe of the glamorous physiques. Michael Gard incorporates LED lighting into these forms and curates these wire mobiles in a way that can be viewed from any angle.
The material used for many of these art pieces is what truly makes them unique. One booth included handmade pottery made from century old wood from trees, while others presented glass blown jewelry and delicate trinkets. The Plaza Art Fair truly does spotlight this raw, hidden talent.
Aside from the slew of intricately curated art pieces, the Plaza Art Fair held performances for groups such as the Phantastics, Back Alley Brass Band, Brass Rewind and more. The main stage, an acoustic and a local music stage ensured something for everyone’s ears.
“Cowtown Country Club is my favorite (band) so far,” UMKC junior Nyah Cunningham said on Sunday. “Just listening to them while looking at all the art is so calming.”
The Plaza Art Fair is no stranger to rain – being held every third weekend after Labor Day, this is to be expected. However, this didn’t stop thousands from attending on Sunday afternoon.
“It was totally worth it,” said UMKC senior Anel Kovac. “I do wish I would’ve brought my umbrella, though.”
