On Thursday, Sept.12, artist and fashion designer Hadley Clark debuted her new exhibition “I Made This for You and Me” at the UMKC Gallery of Art.
Clark’s latest exhibition defies the traditional boundaries of wearable art. For Clark, it is not about the clothing but the visual narrative. The exhibition invites viewers to explore creativity and personal expression, and offers a fresh perspective on the future of fashion as art.
“The ideas in this show are attached to my fascination with the invisible parts that go into making a garment,” Clark said. “For the last 12 years, I’ve been investigating garments and fine garment construction and all the parts of the garment that you don’t see when you’re wearing or shopping.”
Viewers at the reception marvel at Clark’s boundless creativity. Many commented on her unique style and personality.
“The way she composes herself is very whimsical, sparkly, sweet, and romantic and I feel like she conveys that naturally in her life,” said former student Emj Mooney.
Following her first one-woman show, Clark has another that opens in November.
Clark isn’t just an artist and fashion designer. She doesn’t want to be one thing, but instead be “ever-expanding.”
“Every detail is so unique, she uses the stitching in creative ways. She uses so many different textures, that’s what I really appreciate,” Clark’s neighbor Karen Gigrich said.
Clark studied art and fashion because it is something that fulfills her and she wants others to do the same. “Do what you love. Do what lights you up and what makes you sparkle. Not what you think you’re supposed to do,” said Clark. “Don’t study things because you think you’re going to get a job.”
The exhibition will be open to the public until Nov. 15.
