The University Walkway was filled with hundreds of UMKC students and staff last Friday, Sept. 13, for the annual KC Chiefs tailgate.
Students and staff engaged in activities, ate food and jammed with the KC Rumble Band.
The KC Rumble Band played for over an hour at the event. They played the classic Chiefs fight song and iconic hits such as ‘Crazy-in-Love’ by Beyoncé and ‘good 4 u’ by Olivia Rodrigo.
“I was so happy to hear them play Beyonce and Olivia, it elevated my emotions and got me pumped up for the game,” said first-time participant Kendra Youngblood.
She said she didn’t attend last year, but has recently become a Chiefs fan.
“After the Superbowl this past year, I started to take part in the KC Chiefs pride,” said Youngblood. “It has been fun getting to understand the football culture.”
The event had various games such as tic-tac-toe and giant Jenga. The Kansas City Cheerleaders attended to talk and take photos. Attendees got to hang with Kasey Kangaroo and K.C. Wolf.
The event served hot dogs, chips and desserts for free at different booths around the walkway. There were also many tables set up that allowed students and staff to relax and talk with one another.
One of the most popular activities was custom trading cards. Complete with props such as footballs and glasses, students lined up to take a photo and bring home their own Chiefs-themed playing card.
Brooke Higgins, a senior, was participating in the event for the second year in a row.
“I went last year for fun, but this year I am actually working the event. Last year, it was inside the student union because the weather was bad,” said Higgins “I am enjoying it more outside this year because the weather is nice and it is able to bring in more people.”
Following their win against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Chiefs play next this Sunday in Atlanta at 7:20 p.m.
