UMKC Gardening Club held its welcome-back event on Aug. 23, restoring the Student Union rooftop garden for future events.
The club welcomed over 20 members who were all eager to get to work. The group removed overgrowth in the planters and watered the soil.
Snacks and refreshments were provided for all attendees.
“The club was created to promote biodiversity and community around gardening and to encourage students to be environmentally conscious,” said Katlyn Burr, president of the Gardening Club.
Burr also touched on what members can take away from club meetings.
“I hope that students use the skills we teach them in their everyday lives and want to garden at home. Even if it’s just in the dorms with small potted plants,” said Burr.“It’s a lot of hard work, but pays off tremendously.”
Some members expressed their reasoning for joining the club. “I just really like plants,” said Sarah Ellman, a freshman chemistry major.
“I enjoy gardening, I think,” said John Gooden, a freshman computer science major.
The Gardening Club has some trouble finding volunteers and hopes this event can spread the word about its mission.
UMKC Gardening Club meets every fourth Wednesday of the month from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
