Black History Month is celebrated through various events both on and off campus during February.

A highly anticipated event is the UMKC Student National Medical Association Black History Month talent show, an event to celebrate Black talent in honor of Black History Month. The show will consist of singers, poets, artists and even a documentary filmmaker. It will take place in the Student Union Theater on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m.

In the same theater, on Feb. 22 the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey are creating a unique visual journey consisting of live dance performances with pictures and narrations of African American dance history. The event is free to all, and is first come first served with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

The Negro League Baseball Museum is also having free admission for the month of February, courtesy of the Kansas City Royals. The museum recreates the look, sounds and feel of the game’s storied past, honoring past players who reshaped the country and baseball forever.

The African American History & Culture House, known on campus as “The Culture House” is a place where students can deepen their understanding and “enhance and enrich the general understanding of and participation in African-American intellectual culture,” according to the UMKC website

Students and faculty can access a library of African-American materials and host a study group or meeting in their multi-facility room.
