CSSA hops into the Chinese New Year

The Chinese Student and Scholars Association (CSSA) hosted the Chinese Spring Festival Party, a Chinese New Year celebration at UMKC.

This nonprofit, UMKC-recognized organization aims to provide Chinese culture to UMKC students and the greater Kansas City community.

For this year’s event, Chinese lanterns lined the walls of Pierson Auditorium.

The celebration involved delicious food, dancing, a drum performance, singing and an appearance by a band from UMKC. The celebration was delivered in both English and Manderin.

One of the most interesting dances was a Chinese pairs dance. The women were dressed in long, elegant pink dresses and were escorted by their male pairs in white and black attire, dancing in unison to Chinese music. As the men hoisted their female partners into the air, the crowd went wild with excitement.

New Peking provided the vast amount of Chinese cuisine served between performances. Chinese rice, meat, tofu and desserts were among the items to be found at the end of the buffet line. Other foods included fish balls, shrimp, breaded meats and sweet rice.

Other performances included Chinese singing and Tai Chi. Several of the Chinese attendees could be seen lip-synching to the songs that were being sung.

Tai Chi and Kung Fu demonstrations were performed by adults. This year’s festival featured a colorful collection of cultural performances from all ages.
