The Roos came out ready to dominate the dirt at Tuesday’s home opener softball game against the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Jackrabbits.

Within the first inning, senior pitcher Cinda Ramos got on base and Caitlin Christopher got to the plate. Christopher drove Ramos in, resulting in a quick 1-0 lead.

UMKC’s offense stayed hot in the second inning. A single by Ashlin O’Brien and a two-run hit by Emily Bevan gave the Roos a 3-0 lead. The second inning hit parade concluded after Brooke Parker reached first base on an error, stole second, and was driven in by Christopher.

SDSU answered back, scoring two runs in third inning and the Jackrabbits continued to chip away, scoring one run in the 5th, one in the 6th, and tying it in the 7th.

Game one went into extra innings and the Jackrabbits easily scored two runs in the top of the 8th. Kelsey Goodwin started at second base in the bottom half of the inning and O’Brien took a pitch to the shoulder, putting her on first base.

Bevan sacrifice-bunted Goodwin and O’Brien over, and freshman Kelsey Leach drove them in with a two-run RBI triple down the right field line. The winning run just 60 feet from home plate, sophomore Alex Gale stepped in to pinch hit. She drove in the run with a walk-off single and the Roos took game one 8-7.

Amber Grove took the mound in game two and dominated the Jackrabbit’s offense. She allowed one earned run, seven hits and walked none. Brooke Parker stole the show with her speed on the bases. She went three for three, with three runs scored, leaving the four RBIs up to Marlee Maples, Katie Kelley and Cinda Ramos.

The Roos ended the game with a 4-2 victory. UMKC will face Grand Canyon on Friday and Saturday in the second WAC tournament.
