Dinner on a budget: Jax Fish

U-News Staff

An evening out on The Country Club Plaza can be rough on a college student’s tight budget. Compromising the urge to enjoy a craft cocktail with a nice meal might mean living on Ramen noodles for a week, or maybe four. Luckily, for those on a budget, Jax Fish House supplies the drinks, fresh seafood and a low bar tab. When Jax advertises fresh seafood, they mean fresh seafood. East and West coast oysters, fresh and salt water fish are flown in daily to ensure the best quality in Kansas City. The ambiance matches the colorfully fresh menu. An aquarium divides the bar from the dining room and the walls are covered in caged oyster shells, guaranteeing the full experience of dining under the sea.

Happy hour takes place daily from 4-6 p.m., but Monday is the night to experience Jax for the first time because every hour is happy from open to close. Whether your drink of choice is bourbon, vodka or beer, there is a cocktail low priced and high quality on the menu for you.

If that isn’t enough to get you in the door, Kansas City’s top bartender, Kenny Cohrs, is the one serving up the drinks. The happy hour drink menu ranges from the “Cucumber Lemon Press” to everyone’s favorite; “The Affirmed,” made with cherry infused bourbon, cinnamon syrup, ginger ale and lemon.  All cocktails are $4 or $5, and draft beers are a dollar off. If your stomach is craving a tasty bite after a few rounds, try a dozen Emerson oysters for $1.25 each, or choose from an extensive list of appetizers straight from the sea, all under $7. A must have is the tuna melt with shaved onion, piquillo tapenade and cheddar cheese.

It’s  time to step away from dingy quarter beer nights and $1 well specials, and enjoy a quality night out at a fabulous new restaurant for a low price. Keep it  casual or dress to the nines  because either way, the Jax staff is ready to revamp your Monday night out and make it one to remember. Jax Fish House is located at 43rd Street and Roanoke and offers complementary parking under Hotel Sorella.
