The UMKC women’s basketball team came close to an overtime victory but lost 61-51 to the Utah Valley Wolverines on Saturday night.

Freshman Samantha Waldron came up big during the game with a career-high 19 points. Sophomore Grace Mitchell grabbed her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds.

“I’m proud of the way our team battled tonight to send the game into overtime,” Head Coach Marsha Frese said.  “We were getting great looks at the basket for most of the game, but tonight we just didn’t have our typical shooting performance.  You could see that some of our legs down the stretch weren’t there with our shots falling short.  I’m proud, though, that we were in a position to win the game in regulation but couldn’t close it out.”

The Roos led the game 20-16 at the half, before stretching the lead even further right out of the locker rooms. But late in the game, a huge drive by the Wolverines gave them their first lead of the game.

UMKC fought back to tie the game and sending it to overtime. Free throws by freshman Kiana Law kept the Roos in it, before a 10-1 scoring drive gave the Wolverines the victory.

The UMKC women’s basketball team (6-22, 4-9) will head to Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday to take on the Grand Canyon Antelopes (13-13, 7-6).
