Winter Life Hacks

Frank Lillig

Winter is a tough time of year for both people who like it and those who don’t.  Here are a few hacks for keeping your car running, your house cozy and your clothes warm.

  • Keep a little extra piece of carpet in your car, or you can use your floor mats under your tires in case you get stuck in the snow.
  • Spray non-stick cooking spray on a shovel to keep the snow from sticking to it while shoveling.
  • Put Ziploc bags on side mirrors so they don’t get covered in ice.
  • Socks on windshield wipers will keep them from getting frozen.
  • Put saran wrap on your house windows to keep the heat inside.
  • Use pipe insulation or a pool noodle under doors to keep out drafts.
  • Sew two equal-sized pieces of fabric together, leaving space to pour in a cup or two of rice. Then sew them shut around the rice. Microwave this clever handwarmer for approx. 30 seconds.
  • Mix three parts vinegar with one part water.  Apply to defrost your windows.
  • Place an electric blanket or hot water bottle in your bed to warm it up.
  • Place an electric blanket or hot water bottle in your dresser to warm your clothes.
  • Recycle old sweaters and turn them into mittens or slippers.
